SALLY GALL was born in Houston in 1956 and received her BFA degree in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. The recipient of several major awards, her work is exhibited at galleries and museums around the country. Her works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, among others. Gall currently lives in New York.

MARK STRAND, distinguished poet, essayist, novelist and former Poet Laureate, is author of Weather of Words, Blizzard of One, and nine other books. For Subterranea he contributes a powerful essay addressing the emotion of grandeur elicited by Gallís photographs, the power of silence, and the iconic resonance of the underworld they depict. Strand currently lives in Chicago, and is Professor on the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.
