Become an Umbrage Intern:
Umbrage offers part-time internships to highly-qualified college students or recent graduates. For editorial interns, the job involves a wide variety of activities, including general writing, research for new titles, data entry, errands, and assisting with copy editing. Design internships involve picture research, sequencing and layout, caption and flap copy creation, printing and production liaison, as well as general office work.
The ideal applicant will have excellent writing, researching, and editing skills, be comfortable on the phone, and be interested in current affairs, art, photography, human rights, publishing, web sites, museum work, or marketing. We require a commitment of a minimum of two days per week during the semester and are ideally looking for a full-time commitment during the summer months.
Interns must be willing and able to multitask in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will be organized, patient, and eager to jump feet-first into chaos. Macintosh computer skills a must (helpful are: MS Office Suite, InDesign, Photoshop). Proofreading and copy editing experience useful. This is a fairly non-hierarchical space so we expect that everyone will pitch in to use their special skills.
To apply, please send a cover letter telling us a little bit about yourself and why you are interested in publishing, along with a resume, your availability, and either writing samples (articles or school papers are OK) or samples from your design portfolio, to Catherine Neckes at catherine@umbragebooks.com.
